About the composer
Hailing from Newtonmore in the Scottish Highlands, Niall was taught the pipes by John MacDougall and Dr Kenneth MacKay. After a successful career as a soldier and piper in the Queen's Own Highlanders, he is now a piping instructor in the East Ross district, where he has taught many top young pipers.
Niall has won numerous solo prizes, including Gold Medals at both Inverness and Oban, three Gold Medals at the Braemar Highland Gathering and runner-up at the Glenfiddich Championship. He has since judged at premier competitions.
In 2024 he published "The Fyrish Collection", a book of original pipe music including a number of piobaireachd compositions.
This tune was written for CNP's 2024 composing competition.
