About the composer
James began his piping journey in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
In his illustrious career he has played in a world champion pipe band, led another band to win North American championships, and tutored yet another band to become the Juvenile World champions. As a soloist he has succeeded internationally, winning many prizes including several places in the Oban and Inverness Gold Medals.
James is an active composer, judge, and teacher, having taught at various schools across Canada. He is currently the Executive Director at the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada.
James’s tune is named for Alexander MacHattie, one of three brothers who left Scotland for Canada in the 1790s. Alexander is a direct ancestor of the composer.
